PSLE MATH 2017 - REMAINDER/BRANCHING CONCEPT

1/19/2018

Comments

 Happy new year to everyone!

It’s been a long time since we have posted our last video tutorial. We have been busy setting up our first branch in Clementi! Visit us at 433 Clementi avenue 3, #01-262, or call or WhatsApp 9022 3314 if you are interested in signing up for our lessons.

Today, in our very first blog post, we are hereto share with you a question featured in the 2017 PSLE. This question involves the use of the remainder concept. You can approach the question with either the branching diagram or with models.
We will show you both methods in the video as in Polymath Learning Centre, we expose students to the different ways of solving a question and allow students to find their own preferred method. After the preferred method has been selected, we follow through with the method until the student attains mastery.

You may be thinking, will being exposed with multiple methods cause confusion in the student? We believe that it does the opposite. Established research in the field of psychology has suggested that learning how to approach the same question with different approaches build up the student’s sense and mastery with numbers.

Without further ado, the following question is featured in the video. Remember that this question is adapted from the PSLE 2017 math paper, so if you have already gone through the paper with your child, this question serves as extra practice as it is slightly changed from the original video.
The key learning points from this video are:
  1. Thinking of proportion(s) given to you as units.
  2. Be able to postpone your curiosity about an unknown and just write the unknown down as letters or  words such as "total" and "remainder" first. As you proceed with the question, the unknowns will  eventually be solved.

Also, we have lined up 5 videos for the next 2 weeks so do pay close attention to this space!

Enjoy and we will see you next time!
